This app is for students aged 11-16 who are studying world history. It is also for anyone who knows little or nothing about this crucial episode, which transformed human society on three continents - Africa, the Americas and Europe.

Why did this terrible commerce begin, and expand so greatly?

What people - Europeans and Africans - were involved in this trade?

How did it come to help shape the modern world to the extent that it did?

A sequence of interactive, animated maps show why the trade began; what factors drove its expansion; the impact it had on African societies; the new kinds of societies it gave rise to in the Americas; the unforeseen changes it brought to the European nations involved; and the long-term effects it had on world history.

The app also covers the terrible personal experiences of the enslaved Africans caught up in the trade - and of the hardly less lethal effects on the European slavers.

Full teaching guidance is given for using the app with different age and ability levels. Appropriate suggestions for student activities are included.
